From the Editors

This month we are featuring Intelligence, number 13 of the Containing Principles (numbered 10-19).  Intelligence is one of those principles that seems straightforward; we assume it means a mental ability, “being smart.”  But the spiritual Principle, as usual, has a different nuance.  Intelligence has to do with a consciousness sensitized to the processing and organizing of information.  If you’re contracted with Intelligence, you love information – but it doesn’t necessarily mean you do well in society’s measures of “intelligence.” It is associated with “human micro-universes” because Intelligence is attuned to the many hierarchies and branches and families that are nested within the human, from molecules to enzymes to cells to organs, all of them sharing information.

One of our dream sisters brings us insights about the Principle of Intelligence:

The principle of Intelligence is an information-management system; it is the ability to communicate and respond to information. Intelligence is about exchanging information with all aspects of form; it transcends time and space.

The following are examples of Intelligence flowing through us:

--On a very still day a friend is meditating in her garden. When she opens her eyes, she sees a gentle breeze blow across her flowers, and then all is still again.

--A spiritual director needs to talk to a client about rescheduling an appointment. The telephone rings, and it is the client who also wants to reschedule.

--I am lying on a bed preparing to have an ultrasound. The moment the technician begins I see an image of a black circle surrounded by a peridot glow. (The results of the ultra sound show that all is clear.)

--People who have died appear in our dreams bringing us messages from beyond.

--For several days a hawk lands in a tree outside my window. I don’t see him anymore, but later I find a hawk feather on the path where I take my walk.

The more we open ourselves, the more we recognize the principle of Intelligence flowing through us. We may not always understand what the message is in time/space, but the information is living within us and something has been added to the morphic field.

Dreams of Intelligence

We can learn about the principles by examining our dreams. Here are three dreams of Intelligence:

“Amiability, appreciation, accessibility. Bounty, balance, benevolence.” I’m seeing a whole alphabet of words, positive words, three to a set, from A to Z.  But wait --  there’s a gap, some letters are missing. I wake up in the dream and think of some.  Excellence, energy. . . flexibility, forethought, friendliness. . . I keep going, but then I get stuck when I get to the letter K, and fall back asleep (still in the dream).

This dream is like an Intelligence prayer or affirmation.  Letters, numbers, and positive thinking.

I’m a young woman with my fiancé being lined up to go through a big building at the university, to be ‘identified’ and somehow tagged. After this, we’ll be able to be tracked anywhere. No one else seems suspicious, but he and I know we don’t want this; it’s a step toward totalitarianism.
We decide to try to get out now while the crowds are still milling and the lines not clearly formed. We don’t want to be noticed by anyone, because we don’t know who’s working for ‘them.’ Soon we’re able to slip out a side exit, to the right, and walk out into some gardens. We separate.  On a winding walkway, I suddenly hear people coming my way. I leap behind a big tree stump and try to melt into the background. I wish I had worn a dark shirt – from now on I will.  And I will research information on protection by spells and amulets, a lost art.

This dream tends to invoke fear by the reference to “totalitarianism”, but if we step back from our customary associations, we can see it is essentially an Intelligence dream.  Identification, tracking, getting a “total” perspective, using the “universe-city” are functions of the Intelligence principle.  At the same time, Intelligence “melts into the background.”  It operates at the outset of consciousness, when the “lines are not clearly formed.”  A curious aspect is the “research” into spells and amulets.  In older societies, these were regarded as magical ways to affect reality, but in their origin were arcane channels of information.

I was at a theatrical event. In just a few short lines I realized it was a play written and performed by conspiracy theorists. I got up to leave. An actress on the stage addressed me, "Don't you dare walk out!" There was NO WAY I was going to stay after that. I saw her nod to someone -- a man in a dark trench coat -- who then followed me. Secret Service?  Central Intelligence? Does he honestly think covert operations can stop me? Do these people not know the difference between reality and theater? And do they not know that all that gloom and doom is a mind-control technology?

I couldn’t find my purse and went looking for it. The man in the dark coat followed at an "appropriate" distance. Did he think I didn't see him? I saw N, an old friend, who waved and yelled, "Hey, do you ever look good!!" I told him, "I needed that!" Then I saw the purse across the room in a booth next to the man in the dark coat. I called to him, "Would you mind grabbing my purse and bringing it, since you're going to follow me out anyway?" He looked shocked, but he picked up my purse and started toward me.

I walked out and saw R and J – a friend who had just committed suicide, and his former lover. She looked particularly happy -- as if R had just told her how good she looked, too! He was clear-eyed and smiling. I said, "Sorry to hear about your suicide. Are you okay?" He said, "Yeah. It's good. We’re going away together for a couple of months. She's going to read to me." I looked at her. She had never looked so happy. I said, "Oh, walking him through the clear light?" She said, "Yeah, that and a quick trip to Paris. I haven't been to Paris in ages.

This dream contrasts the “mind-control” technology of those who keep information secret (“secret service”) with those who walk in the light, even after death.  The dreamer sees goodness rather than “gloom and doom” and walks without fear, allowing her “purse,” which often represents the personal aspect of identity, to be carried by her shadow.  This teaches us that the ego often holds onto the shadow side of reality, but that is not the truth.  Intelligence has to be out in the open to work at its best.

To find Intelligence in your dreams, look for the color violet or ruby, the number 13 (or many numbers), and references to information or secret intelligence.

Why the Nervous System?

Isn’t it just too obvious that the nervous system with the brain and spinal cord is related to the principle of Intelligence?  But our experience in working with the principles suggests that if it’s so obvious, we’re probably missing something.

The body part associated with a principle usually provides an important metaphor for understanding the principle itself.  From that perspective, the nervous system points to the decentralization of Intelligence (perhaps in contrast to a “CIA” metaphor).  Neurons reach to every part of the body and, as the new discipline of psycho-neuro-immunology demonstrates, are related to not only the psychological makeup of a person, but also to the immune system. Intelligence is certainly not limited to the brain as was once thought.

The nervous system exists to transmit information.  It is constantly in motion, receiving and sending electrical impulses that leap across space – the tiny space between neurons.  This reminds us to see Intelligence as dynamic, continuously changing.  There is no settled “thing” we can call Intelligence.

More Than IQ; and Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships, by Daniel Goleman
Goleman’s groundbreaking work on different types of intelligence has made enormous impact on education as well as on self-improvement methods. His books are rich in examples and also are grounded in neuroscientific studies.  If you didn’t read his earlier work, these would be a good way to catch up on the information.

Moral Intelligence: Enhancing Business Performance and Leadership Success, by Doug Lennick and Fred Kiel.
This new book by financial expert inserts that leaders who follow a path of integrity, responsibility, compassion and forgiveness—a moral compass—seek a life destination, a powerful place of understanding, which leads to personal and professional satisfaction and success.

Intelligence in the News

Intelligence has actually been in the news for the past 8 years – it is the Sun principle of President George W. Bush. People often find themselves in a new position, or at the forefront of a new idea or cause, when the gift of their Sun Principle is needed.  In this case, with the “Information Age” really taking off, the first years of the new millennium were an opportunity for a president to deliver the gift of Intelligence in the form of information that would empower individuals, groups, and whole nations.

The Bush presidency did show a huge interest in managing information.  Driven in part by 9-11, the administration took upon itself to gather intelligence – but unfortunately, sometimes in questionable ways such as with torture.  It has also been questioned whether those in power knew how to use intelligence, as in the incorrect information spread about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.  Many experts think that the Bush presidency had a great investment in tailoring information, even editing of scientific reports unfavorable to its views on climate change.

Historians will later weigh the evidence more objectively, and our point is not to judge the outcome.  But it is very interesting that the use of information was such a prominent issue in the presidency of a man whose soul contract highlights Intelligence.

By the way, it is interesting to note that the Sun Principle of Henry Paulson, Secretary of the U.S. Treasury – who has, remarkably, become an extremely powerful person just five months before his tenure was to end – is Generosity. That’s the principle of “give-away,” and it’s connected to destruction-and- reconstruction in order to achieve a new balance of giving and taking.  How he delivers the gift of his Sun Principle could affect the whole world in profound ways.

Training in emotional intelligence could help medical residents and fellows become more sensitive toward their patients, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. Patients are less likely to complain and more likely to have positive health results if their physician communicates well with them.

6. Who's Who in Intelligence

Famous people – how do they deliver the gift of their Sun Principle?  Ask yourself that question about each of the following, who have Sun in Intelligence:

  • Yo Yo Ma, 1955-
American cellist, born in Paris to Chinese parents also of musical talent, he was a child prodigy who studied violin before he took up the cello at age 4.  His Cello Suites and Inspired by Bach are world-famous.
  • Art Garfunkel, 1941-
American singer and composer, known especially for the 1960s years when he recorded best-selling songs with Paul Simon (“Sounds of Silence,” “Bridge over Troubled Water").
  • Tom Smothers, 1937-
American comedian, composer, and musician, best known as half of the “Smothers Brothers” who had their own variety show in the mid-1960s. In a sensitive time, Tom Smothers fought CBS censors to sneak in references to controversial topics like drugs, sex, war, and religion. He believed that “The only valid censorship of ideas is the right of people not to listen."

  • Jane Goodall, 1934-
English primatologist, ethologist, and anthropologist; United Nations Messenger of Peace. She is well-known for her 45-year study of chimpanzee social and family interactions in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania.

  • Andy Warhol, 1926-1987
Illustrator and painter whose iconoclastic approach made him the icon of “pop art.”  He truly had an affection for popular culture. Controversial in the 1960s, he enjoyed considerable success later on, although he was also criticized for being a “business artist.”.

  • Jack Webb, 1920-1982
American actor, producer, and writer; best known for his portrayal of Sergeant Joe Friday in Dragnet, a popular radio (1941-54) and television (1951-58)  series.  Webb was known for emphasizing realism and objectivity: “The story you are about to hear is true; only the names have been changed to protect the innocent"; and “Just the facts, ma’am.”

  • Lucille Ball, 1911-1989
Outstanding comedienne whose television series, I Love Lucy and its sequels ran for nearly thirty years.  Combined with her earlier acting career, she had one of the longest careers ever in Hollywood.

  • Ayn Rand, 1905-1982
Russian-born American novelist (The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged), widely known for her philosophical system of Objectivism. She was an uncompromising advocate of rational individualism and laissez-faire capitalism, and opposed socialism, altruism, and religion.

  • Golda Meir, 1898-1978
Israel’s first woman prime minister; the world’s third, but the first without any prior family connection.  In a pre-feminist era, David Ben-Gurion used to call her the “best man in the government."

  • James Joyce, 1882-1941
Irish expatriate writer, best known for his landmark novel Ulysses (1922), Finnegans Wake (1939), and the semi-autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916).

  • Cecil John Rhodes, 1853-1902
English-born businessman whose South African diamond company, De Beers, once marketed 90% of the world’s diamonds; one of the world’s wealthiest men at his death.  He founded Rhodesia (named after him; now two nations, Zambia and Zimbabwe).  A confirmed British imperialist, he wanted to establish a secret society to promote British rule of the world.  He established the Rhodes Fellowship to enable students from former British territories to study at Oxford University.

  • George Westinghouse, 1846-1914
American engineer who invented the railroad air brake and was a pioneer of the electrical industry.  One of Thomas Edison's main rivals in the early implementation of the American electricity system, Westinghouse' system using alternating current ultimately prevailed over Edison's insistence on direct current.

  • Karl Marx, 1818-1883
Prussian philosopher, political economist, and revolutionary, most famous for his analysis of history, summed up in the opening line of the introduction to the Communist Manifesto (1848): "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles."

  • Louis Braille, 1809-1852
Inventor of the well-known system of raised dots by which blind people can read, a system which became universal and is now called by his name.  Braille himself was blind.

7. The Child's Garden

The spiritual parenting of our children – through studying their principles – teaches us as well as them.  We at Generosity Incorporated believe that bringing this work to the next generation can be one of the most powerful forces to heal humanity.  Here’s an example of learning from our children:

My youngest has Intelligence in Pluto. According to the Invisible Garment teachings, Pluto's influence shows up when the chips are down. The Pluto principle guides us through our underworld journeys. There is also the interesting statement that that this principle ensures the "victory of life over death." It's as if we write into our contract a guarantee that we will thrive even in the face of difficulty and death.

Intelligence, my son's Pluto principle, shows up dramatically when he has experiences that send other people into depression. For example, he is an athlete at a large university. Recently he had an injury which knocked him out of the fall season, and may require surgery. This kind of injury sometimes ends athletic careers, and would ordinarily be quite demoralizing. My son, though he is quite frustrated and disappointed, has dived into information gathering, researching every website and visiting every expert he can find. He learned of an amazing physical therapy program, which he is faithfully working. He is retraining his shoulder from a position of informed optimism. Intelligence definitely kicks in for this kid, and for that his mother is thankful and in awe.

8. Poetry

The River by Ralph Waldo Emerson

And I behold once more
My old familiar haunts; here the blue river,
The same blue wonder that my infant eye
Admired, sage doubting whence the traveller came,--
Whence brought his sunny bubbles ere he washed
The fragrant flag-roots in my father's fields,
And where thereafter in the world he went.
Look, here he is, unaltered, save that now
He hath broke his banks and flooded all the vales
With his redundant waves.
Here is the rock where, yet a simple child,
I caught with bended pin my earliest fish,
Much triumphing,--and these the fields
Over whose flowers I chased the butterfly,
A blooming hunter of a fairy fine.
And hark! where overhead the ancient crows
Hold their sour conversation in the sky:--
These are the same, but I am not the same,
But wiser than I was, and wise enough
Not to regret the changes, tho' they cost
Me many a sigh. Oh, call not Nature dumb;
These trees and stones are audible to me,
These idle flowers, that tremble in the wind,
I understand their faery syllables,
And all their sad significance. The wind,
That rustles down the well-known forest road--
It hath a sound more eloquent than speech.
The stream, the trees, the grass, the sighing wind,
All of them utter sounds of 'monishment
And grave parental love.
They are not of our race, they seem to say,
And yet have knowledge of our moral race,
And somewhat of majestic sympathy,
Something of pity for the puny clay,
That holds and boasts the immeasurable mind.
I feel as I were welcome to these trees
After long months of weary wandering,
Acknowledged by their hospitable boughs;
They know me as their son, for side by side,
They were coeval with my ancestors,
Adorned with them my country's primitive times,
And soon may give my dust their funeral shade.
