NEW! The Manual for Spiritual Parenting, by Connie Kaplan with Tamar Frankiel, is now available as an e-book, at the special introductory price of $5.95!
Based on an online class, incorporating the discoveries and insights of many parents, this book shows you how to use the Thirty Principles to parent your child -- and how to grandparent, and even how to re-parent yourself. In addition, this update of Connie's work shows you how to understand the personal ego, and how to use your astrological placements to understand your and your child's relationships to the larger world.

This month we are featuring Unity, number 16 of the Containing Principles (numbered 10-19). Unity is much talked about but little understood. On the one hand, it is represented in the levels of consciousness by awareness of lineage – the genetic heritage that connect us. This seems limiting because, on the other hand, we talk of unity of all people, as though it were a universal. How does Unity really work? Read further to get some clues. . .

This month's principle is Unity. One of our dream sisters tells us how Unity has been reflected in her life: |
The angels tell us that “Life longs to see itself mirrored in itself. Life, through DNA, is programmed to recreate itself in images of itself. This principle of Unity is the expression of life that identifies itself in partnership with itself."
When I was a little girl, I remember my mother’s amazement when Watson and Cricks won the Nobel Peace Prize for their work with the double helix of the DNA strand. She couldn’t get enough information about their work and intuitively knew how important it was. She was a gardener and spent her entire life working with seeds and plants and cuttings. When she retired she lived with us and tended our garden for the rest of her life.
She enjoyed all things connected with preserving food. During the fall canning harvest, when a jar would seal, that certain “ping” always brought her comment “Well, there’s one that sealed, if we never get any more!” Now that my hair is graying and I’m tending to the garden, I’ve learned that there are more conversations going on there than I ever realized. The plants respond to our very skins. They “read” our DNA and reply. Does our breath inform their growth? I can literally feel my mother’s DNA in the soils of my garden patch.
When I was a little girl, I loved to hear my mother say “When I was a little girl….” because I knew I was going to hear a story from the past. During this year’s harvest, while I was making raspberry jam with my granddaughter, I heard her say, when a jar sealed “Well, there’s one that sealed, if we never get any more!"
I like it when my granddaughter works in the garden with me. We talk and share stories and enjoy being together. What a marvel it would be if, when she reaches my age, her grandchildren might hear her say “When I was a little girl, my grandmother told me how dreamers changed the world."

Dreams of Unity |
Here are some dreams of Unity. We had already picked a few, when at the last moment two dreamers reported a very interesting pair of Unity dreams, so we couldn’t resist adding those:
I dreamed that a BUNCH of people lived at my sister's big house -- easily 30 people living there including many members of my extended family, plus many ex-boyfriends and many dreaming sisters. Every morning we gathered in the living room and did an interpretive dance acting out our dreams. (My cynical self thought some people might have over-done it. I had to keep myself from laughing a couple of times.) The dream was filled with interesting vignettes between people I know well. We found a zebra-striped tiny kitty that became our house pet, along with my dog Ginger who liked the kitty. Once I went to the kitchen to get pie for a few of my friends. There was an older woman who was the housekeeper. As she helped me cut the pie, she told me she thought hers was the most interesting job imaginable. What a deep privilege to keep house and cook for "the most interesting people in the world.
This beautiful picture of Unity combines family, friends, and fellow dreamers, waking and dreaming, and even friendship between dog and cat. Unity shows itself as essential to real life – the dreamer repeats “living” or “lived” three times. Unity is not sameness, it is the interweaving of “interesting” people – people with interests, people interested in each other – who each have a piece of the pie.
My friend has been asked by a family to clear their home of unwanted energies. She will do the clearing with a lit candle. I ask if I can assist by smudging with sage. I don't receive a yes or no answer, so I take it on myself to do it anyway.
I begin to smudge on a lower wall in the kitchen, using my owl wing fan to push the smoking sage around and sweep the old energies out. My friend joins me with her lit round ball candle, and goes to a specific area of the wall, on the far right near the refrigerator, to focus her clearing. I'm curious about her focus, and she points out a small splintered hole in the wood wall that the owners mentioned was a bullet hole. Ah yes, I understand how that could be the reason for the 'bad' energy.
Then I go upstairs to continue smudging, but it seems I'm the only one trying to clear the whole house. I get the feeling that time is running short, that the family wants the house cleared NOW. I try to work faster, and suddenly my owl wing fan comes apart, flying away and landing on the floor, because I am going so fast and using so much force in my sweeping. The fan can be put back together, it was just a joint that came apart, but I can no longer use it in the moment.
If we are contracted with Unity, part of our job may be to clear out 'bad karma' so to speak, from our genetic lineage. In this dream one person is doing a general cleaning, the other focused on a 'bullet point,' but it cannot be rushed or forced. (Interestingly, in Jewish tradition there is a custom to search the house with a lighted candle the night before Passover -- when the central ritual is to transmit the tradition from parents to children.)
I’m seeing rows and columns of colored slides, natural environments of earth. Some are being highlighted, apparently areas of special concern, including parts of the Amazonian rain forest. I don’t know what to do with all this information. Whoever is showing it to me picks up my question and telepathically reassures me: it’s just being downloaded through your brain so others can access it.
A Princess in a lavender setting is reviewing her life story. She doesn’t like being a princess and is rather bored or unconnected to it all. Then it is explained to her how lineage is a key thing, not just her straight line of ancestors but the unique and special connections – the serendipitous quality of the past, how people connect and mix. It appears not as a straight line or boxed chart but zig-zag, this way and that, like stars in a constellation connected by an imaginary line.
The first segment suggests a unity beyond the physical: what we ‘download’ into our individual brains is accessible to others. The second segment is explicitly about Unity, with the appearance of both the Violet (lavender) sphere and a different explanation of lineage. The message comes through a princess because royal lineage is usually a paradigm of genetic consciousness. But the dream emphasizes the randomness of how people happen to get together to pool their genes, and the lines we think are so clear are created by our imagination.
Surprisingly, the reference to "slides" in that dream of Unity from many years ago turns up in the next dream from just a few weeks ago:
I want to tune into a TV/computer program to see the current installment but I can't find the channel. The program I do tune into is a medical show where a woman is talking to her doctor about getting pregnant. Behind her is a machine like nothing I've ever seen before. Slides, about 4” long, kick out; they look like old film negatives. On the slides are DNA data. Without human intervention, the slide kicks out of the slot, flies across the opening and slips into a machine on a woman's desk. I realize that an unseen hand is changing this patient's pregnancy. Here comes another one, and then a third. She's going to have triplets and these babies are under someone else's control. My eyes/camera pans in to get a close-up of these devices. I get so close I can see incidental scratches on the metal casing. .
The following dream was the same night, halfway across the country, and the two dreamers know each other well - clearly a case of dreaming together:
I'm at a retreat, in a discussion, and I keep saying, "I don't want to be separatist, but there's US and there's THEM, and THEY aren't going to be able to handle what's coming. Our spiritual work has grounded us in ways we don't know." I was very quiet and resigned; the party was over and nobody could see it. The we got interrupted by a bunch of people coming into our workspace, as if they were fleeing some drama outside.
Next, I was pregnant with twins or triplets that were in eggs the shape of diamonds - like diamonds cut for a ring, flat on top, faceted on the bottom. The eggs, brown-green in color, were on a lighted colored shelf. They looked like the plant called Chinese lantern pods. The light was variegated and kept changing like a mood light. Some men brought in more eggs and put them on the shelf next to mine. I knew my DNA was somehow different to have created eggs this shape.
The second dream puts forth the dilemma for the Unity principle: “Us” vs. “Them” mentality. The dreamer recognizes the reality but at the same time wants to reject it and not be separatist. “The party was over” may actually be a positive statement: “Part-ness,” partitioning, is ending. “No-body can see it” may refer to the invisible unification of all.
The two dreams of pregnancy – amazingly similar! – offer a different perspective: The way to Unity is not through societal efforts to create unity but through the work of women – a new kind of “genetic” work. It’s a genesis or birthing with a new DNA. The ova that look like diamonds, slides, and shelves suggest that this DNA is not biological. Rather it is spiritual – working with Light and shapes. We would venture to suggest that the “triplets” are the triple spiritual work taught by Connie – the Dreaming, the Principles, and the Colors.
To find Unity
in your dreams, look for the color violet or rose, for references to generations or genetics
... to the number 16... to the ribs or torso.

Why
the Ribs? |
Ribs are separate bones, but together they make a firm yet flexible structure. The upper ribs are connected to the sternum (breastbone), but the lower ones are “floating,” connected only by cartilage. That’s part of their flexibility. And that’s what genetic consciousness is about: Separate individuals, each with their own unique DNA, yet related through their origin. It is interesting that the vital organs of heart, lungs, stomach, liver, pancreas are all protected by this flexible and partially open “cage,” rather than by plates of bone. There needs to be room for expansion and movement even within a protected space. That perhaps is a metaphor for the need for genetic diversification.

Eden in the East: The Drowned Continent of Southeast Asia by Stephen Oppenheimer
A British physician who is a renowned expert in the synthesis of DNA studies wrote this book after realizing that most of the standard explanations of the spread of humanity in the South Pacific were wrong. But his work goes much further, explaining the genetics of unity and diversity and, in the process, shedding light on the origins of our ancient myths of Eden. You can see visuals based on Oppenheimer’s work, about the peopling of the world, at http://www.bradshawfoundation.com/journey/.
The Third Jesus Christ: The Christ we Cannot Ignore by Deepak Chopra
Chopra centers his investigation of Jesus on one question: Why are Jesus's teachings impossible to live by? He then takes a radical point of view, proposing that Jesus was talking about an internal rebirth – a transformation of individuals that would radically change their perspective. In other words, the "third" Jesus Christ is different from the one who walked in Galilee (the first), different from the one who has been mythologized by Christianity (the second), but is instead the God-consciousness that lies in each individual's heart. God-consciousness is Unity-consciousness. "Love thy neighbor as thyself" means know that thy neighbor and thee are One. --CCK
Kabbalah: A Brief Introduction for Christians, audio book by Tamar Frankiel.
Unity despite its oneness has many aspects, ranging from the design of DNA, to the inner spiritual design of each human being, to the inner design of humanity as a whole, in relation to our Divine source. Kabbalah is one of many theological-spiritual inquiries into that design, and our own Tamar is a scholar of kabbalah. Generosity Incorporated produced this audio book, and it's not only for Christians, despite the title! It's available at www.generosityincorporated.com.

Unity in the News |
It’s ironic that Unity came up for this month in our random pick among the principles -- because October-November of U.S. election years often highlight disunity. But look at the examples below. Do any of the examples suggest the spiritual principle of Unity at work?
- Headline: Good News in Our DNA
“I'm looking for the good news in the human genome," said Jasper Rine, UC Berkeley professor of molecular and cell biology. He has found that simple supplementation with vitamins can often restore some deficient enzymes, discovered from DNA analysis, to full working order.http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/06/080602214135.htm

World Leaders Seek Unity to Fight Financial Crisis
September 24, 2008 French president Nicolas Sarkozy and other leaders insisted on a global approach to the financial crisis, even as the United States pushed ahead with a unilateral approach.

- Headline: Sunni Tribes Seek Unity
Sunni tribes are pushing for the creation of a national tribal organization to end the violence in Iraq. Tribal chiefs will set up cohesive nationwide ‘salvation councils’ to support local police forces against terrorism, then try to ally with Shia groups who are also being attacked by Al Qaeda. The councils will also be able to evict foreign fighters. http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2007/09/2008525141728481550.html

The Child's Garden |
The spiritual parenting of our children – through studying their principles – teaches us as well as them. We at Generosity Incorporated believe that bringing this work to the next generation can be one of the most powerful forces to heal humanity. Here’s an example of learning from observing our children's relationship to a spiritual Principle:
Children who have Unity in their soul contracts often have a special relationship to, or consciousness of, their lineage. You may notice it more if there is something ‘broken’ in the natural-family consciousness, but in any case you should be aware that it could become very important at certain times in life. Here are some examples:
I have two nieces, both in their early teens. I rarely see them, but when I do they have completely different reactions to me. The older is polite, sweet, and like most older children feigns interest in what adults have to say. The younger, however, follows me with her eyes and eagerly waits for a chance to have a conversation. She’s fascinated by me just because I’m a relative. She doesn’t have many, because her dad and I are the only two on our side, and he’s divorced from her mom. She really cares about having ‘extended family.’ Her Jupiter principle is Unity. Perhaps she senses an aura of blessing in connecting to some kind of lineage.
My husband’s grandson (from a previous marriage) is also more interested in the larger family than anyone of his siblings. He’s the only one who wants to spend time with ‘grandpa’ and, though his mother says he’s usually is a bit frenetic with ADHD, seems calm and at ease, like a little adult, when he’s with us and can ask questions of his granddad. His Venus and Mercury are in Unity.
A young man that became close to us was from a broken family, his father and mother having separated when he was two years old. Many years passed, he developed talents in music and sports, and went off to college. He was haunted, though, by a memory from his grandmother’s house, where he would sometimes go with his father on visiting days. There were photos on the walls of bearded, black-hatted men from Eastern Europe. He had no idea who they were or what they represented, but he felt that they were from another world. That was actually true - his grandmother’s and father’s lives were completely American and they did not tell stories of the past. Years later, he was invited to a Jewish holiday event; suddenly the memory of those pictures came flooding back. He started studying the Yiddish language in college and found himself very quickly fluent in it. He later told us that unexpectedly, he had found that his world was that old ‘other world.’ His Midheaven is in Unity.
And my youngest daughter, whose Pluto is in Unity, wants very much that she, and her siblings, will name children after relatives who have passed away. For her, Unity is the victory of continuing life over death.

8. Poetry |
Sometimes Unity takes the dreamer beyond death. . . .
The following is from http://www.writespirit.net/spiritual_poets/william_blake/selected poetry/
The Land of Dreams
by William Blake
Awake, awake, my little boy!
Thou wast thy mother's only joy;
Why dost thou weep in thy gentle sleep?
Awake! thy father does thee keep.
"O, what land is the Land of Dreams?
What are its mountains, and what are its streams?
O father! I saw my mother there,
Among the lilies by waters fair.
"Among the lambs, clothed in white,
She walk'd with her Thomas in sweet delight.
I wept for joy, like a dove I mourn;
O! when shall I again return?"
Dear child, I also by pleasant streams
Have wander'd all night in the Land of Dreams;
But tho' calm and warm the waters wide,
I could not get to the other side.
"Father, O father! what do we here
In this land of unbelief and fear?
The Land of Dreams is better far
Above the light of the morning star."
